Heritable variation and mutagenesis at early International Congresses of Genetics

, : Heritable variation and mutagenesis at early International Congresses of Genetics. Genetics 148(4): 1419-1431

Part of a special issue honoring John W. Drake, editor of the journal from 1982 to 1996. Some of the highlights of past International Congresses of Genetics are recalled, with an emphasis on early work regarding the nature of heritable variation that led to current research on the mechanisms of mutagenesis and DNA repair. Once every 5 years, these congresses provide geneticists with a special opportunity to view the full range of this ever-changing field. Indeed, most of the notable advances in genetics have been discussed at the congresses. Darwin's infinitesimal variations, Bateson's discontinuous variations, Morgan's chromosomes, Muller's mutations, and Timofeeff's targets and Delbruck's genes are discussed.
