, : Modeling evolutionary landscapes: mutational stability, topology, and superfunnels in sequence space. Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences of the United States of America 96(19): 689-94

The sequence space topologies of neutral nets were studied. Neutral nets are collections of sequences (genotypes) interconnected through single-point mutations encoding for the same ground-state structure (phenotype). The modeling results showed that topology can lead to concentration of evolutionary population at some sequences independent of functional fitness, that the organization of native stabilities is funnel-like among certain sets of sequences encoding for the same native structure, and that the presence of repulsive interactions can result in a more rugged sequence-space landscape.
