New probes open windows on gene expression, and more

, : New probes open windows on gene expression, and more. Science 280(5366): 1010-1011

Researchers around the world are striving to develop new probes that can shed light on the molecular workings of tissues. They are using advances in the identification of genes and proteins involved in diseases such as cancer to make new molecular probes that can focus attention on one particular gene or protein. Using techniques like positron emission tomography (PET), magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), and variations on both PET and MRI, the researchers are working on applications such as imaging the expression of native genes, mapping the distribution of proteins, and detecting enzymes. Each imaging technique has both it strengths and weaknesses, and as of yet, it is too early to tell what each technique will ultimately be used for.
