Planning with Nature

, : Planning with Nature. Journal of Soil and Water Conservation 57(5): 6A-119A

City officials in Woodstock, Illinois, are using a wide range of natural resource information for innovative land-use planning. Like many communities in the region, this 22,000-strong city is facing development pressure and the challenge of prospering economically without sacrificing its environment or its citizens' quality of life. As it is based on an inventory of Woodstock's natural resources, the city's new land use plan will help to protect the area's farmland and other natural resources. In part, these data were derived by use of the Land Evaluation Site Assessment system. The results yielded by the inventory and assessment have helped officials to make decisions regarding where and how Woodstock will grow over the next 20 years. Furthermore, new visualization and mapping tools are enabling greater participation by local citizens in planning.
