STATs find that hanging together can be stimulating

, : STATs find that hanging together can be stimulating. Science 273: 0-1

This week's issue of Science contains a paper that sheds new light on how a limited number STATs (signal transducers and activators of transcription) can generate a specific response for each cytokine or growth factor. Xu et al. found that homodimers of STATs 1, 4, 5, and 6 all bound to a region of the human interferon-c gene containing clusters of palindromic GAS elements but with different footprints. The findings indicate that STAT dimers may cooperate in binding to clustered GAS elements. The details of this cooperation may help to determine the cytokine specificity of the response.
