Sex-biased dispersal of great white sharks

, : Sex-biased dispersal of great white sharks. Nature 412(6843): 139-140

The population biology of the great white shark (Carcharodon carcharias) was studied. Genetic analysis was carried out on white sharks collected off the coasts of South Africa, Australia, and New Zealand. The results revealed that the dispersal of this shark is sex-biased, with roving males but nonroving females. Together with other life-history features, including low fecundity, long lifespan, and late age at maturity, the findings also suggest that the population biology of C. carcharias may be more similar to that of marine mammals than to that of other fish.
