The nuclear receptor superfamily: the second decade

, : The nuclear receptor superfamily: the second decade. Cell 83: 5-9

An overview of 4 reviews of the nuclear reactor superfamily is presented. The purpose of the reviews is to discuss the major discoveries and emerging concepts of the past 10 years in the study of the members of this superfamily. The steroid hormone receptor family, a specialized branch of the superfamily that has only recently evolved in vertebrates, is reviewed by Beato et al. The retinoid X receptor heterodimers and orphan receptors are examined from a structural and mechanistic point of view by Mangelsdorf and Evans. Recent efforts to characterize receptor function genetically via homologous recombination are discussed by Kastner et al. Advances in nonvertebrate Drosophila receptors that establish a clear unity between vertebrates and invertebrates and that indicate common genetic and mechanistic features underlying animal development and physiology are reviewed by Thummel.
