US researchers push network of massive spectrometers

, : US researchers push network of massive spectrometers. Nature 396(6708): 201-201

An informal group of U.S. scientists has proposed an ambitious plan for 10 regional centers with powerful NMR spectrometers. According to the group, which is headed by the National High Magnetic Field Laboratory, Florida State University, Tallahassee, the government should spend $110 million on setting up the centers and fitting them with 900 MHz spectrometers. An additional $150 million would be later spent to provide spectrometers that could operate at 1 GHz, which is a higher performance than that presently obtained by any actual or planned NMR instrument. However, due to technical problems relating to the construction of high-performance NMR instruments, in addition to what agency officials describe as a narrow base for NMR spectroscopy among the sciences to which it should be most useful, the proposal has been greeted with skepticism in Washington, D.C.
