A study on the relationship between expression of P-glycoprotein and prognosis in human epithelial ovarian cancer

, : A study on the relationship between expression of P-glycoprotein and prognosis in human epithelial ovarian cancer. Hubei Yikedaxue Xuebao 21(2): 158-161, Apr

Objective: To determine the relationship between the expression of P-glycoprotein and prognosis in human epithelial ovarian cancer. Methods: Immunostaining of P-gp was performed on 30 normal ovaries and 74 primary epithelial ovarian carcinomas which had not received any chemotherapy before surgery. Immunohistochemical study was performed by the streptavidin peroxidase conjugated method using monoclonal antibody JSB-1 directed against P-gp. Results: There were no detectable expression of P-gp in normal ovaries but P-gp immunoreactivity were present on 14 (18.9%) of the tumor tissues. The survival period of patients with P-gp positive tumors was significantly shorter than that of those with P-gp negative tumors (P < 0.01). Conclusion: The result suggests that P-gp expression in patients with epithelial ovarian cancer is a useful marker of a poor prognosis.
