Clinical study on cycloid pyschosis

, : Clinical study on cycloid pyschosis. European Journal of Psychiatry 16(2): 95-101, April-June

The present study assessed the frequency of cycloid psychosis in a consecutive sample of 210 female first admission, non-affective functional psychoses and tested the cycloid psychosis' diagnostic validity. Hospital records were evaluated and patients diagnosed retrospectively with cycloid psychosis were compared, with patients diagnosed with other functional psychoses. Furthermore, a subsample of 20% of patients of both groups could be personally assessed 11 years later. Altogether, 51 (24%) patients fulfilled the diagnostic criteria for cycloid psychosis. Several significant differences between these and patients with other functional psychoses were identified at the time of the patients' first admission, most of them, however, reflecting the cycloid psychosis definition criteria. No significant differences were found on follow-up. We did not succeed to endorse the diagnostic and especially prognostic validity of the cycloid psychosis concept. The results, however, must be interpreted with care due to the study limitations.
