Comparison of neutron activation analysis and inductively coupled plasma-atomic emission spectroscopy for the determination of elements in environmental samples

, : Comparison of neutron activation analysis and inductively coupled plasma-atomic emission spectroscopy for the determination of elements in environmental samples. Dirasat - Al-Gami'at Al-urduniyyat Al-'ulum Al-handasiyyat = Dirasat - University of Jordan

Input of heavy and trace metals into the Zarka River, Jordan, has increased significantly due to the expansion of industry and other activities. To avoid toxicity hazards, there is a need to monitor different environmental samples for these toxic metals. An important requirement in such work is the application of appropriate analytical methods. Instrumental neutron activation analysis and inductively coupled plasma-atomic emission spectroscopy methods were used to analyze sediment samples collected along the Zarka River and to analyze a standard reference material, HISS-1. The experimental results of the standard are compared with certified values, thus assessing the accuracy of the techniques. The results showed that the data obtained by ICP-AES are less reliable when compared with those obtained by INAA. This must be mainly due to the method of dissolution, which is used in ICP technique. This method of dissolution may leave a number of oxides partly or completely unscathed.
