Ecotypes or endemic species? A hypothesis on the evolution of Diatoma taxa (Bacillariophyta) in the northern Baltic Sea

, : Ecotypes or endemic species? A hypothesis on the evolution of Diatoma taxa (Bacillariophyta) in the northern Baltic Sea. Nova Hedwigia 67(3-4): 303-348

Taxa belonging to the genus Diatoma (Bacillariophyta) are dominants in the northern Baltic Sea (<6PIML salinity). In spring, millions of cells per cm2 of D. moniliformis are found along the whole Gulf of Bothnia coast for hundreds of kilometres. In the present study phenotypic variation and distribution of 52 Diatoma populations from the Baltic Sea were studied and compared with freshwater Diatoma populations, including the type material of D. tenuis.
