Editorial: Original observations on fibromyalgia

, : Editorial: Original observations on fibromyalgia. Pain Clinic 12(3): 177-179

The most relevant observation we have made on fibromyalgia is that there is a predisposed constitution. Females with this constitution show hyperactivity and laxity of somatic structures which exaggerates their response to normal usually harmless environmental stimuli (fibrositic diathesis). This may be important in the clinic to help the diagnosis. Some other signs of this constitution are: painful and excess fat, tenderness everywhere, teleangectasias, haemorrhoids, phlebectasias, restless legs, etc. A critique of the criteria for fibromyalgia of the American College of Rheumatology, widely accepted, is based on these and other observations. Lastly, we propose that fibromyalgia and chronic fatigue syndrome should be considered two manifestations of the same disease and not two different diseases as the overlap between these two ailments is very wide.
