In this review a critical analysis of the effects of rumen defaunation on the performance of ruminants is made. It is recognised that the main rumen defaunation effects are on nitrogen outflow to duodenum and on fibre digestion. On average, duodenal protein supplies increase and fibre digestibility usually decrease. This change on the protein/energy ratio of digestion end products can induce an improvement on animal performance when protein supply is a limiting factor.
