Radioecological studies on the plankton of the cooling water reservoir of the Beloyarsk Nuclear Power Plant

, : Radioecological studies on the plankton of the cooling water reservoir of the Beloyarsk Nuclear Power Plant. Ekologiya (Moscow) (4): 274-279, July-August

A study was made of the plankton of the cooling water reservoir of the Beloyarsk Nuclear Power Plant (Russia). It was determined that in the area where the heated waters were released and in a control zone, the phytoplankton was characterized by a dominance of blue-green, green, and pyrophytic algae. The zooplankton was characterized by the dominance of crustaceans over rotifers. The studied areas differed in terms of their species composition and quantitative composition of the dominant complex. There was an absence of statistically significant differences in the total population and biomass of phytoplankton of the heated area and the control area. The zooplankton organisms were inhibited in the Teplyi inlet; this manifested itself in the decrease of their population by 4 times and their biomass by 7 times in comparison with the control area. The concentrations of radionuclides in the plankton of the cooling water reservoir were determined for the period from 1986 to 1988. It was determined that the concentration of radionuclides was higher in the area where the heated waters were released than it was beyond the limits of this zone.
