The effects of chicken manure on the phytoplankton primary production in carp ponds

, : The effects of chicken manure on the phytoplankton primary production in carp ponds. Acta Hydrobiologica 40(4): 215-225

Phytoplankton primary production, chlorophyll a, and phytoplankton numbers were measured in four groups of ponds: 1) manured and fed with pellets containing 27% protein; 2) fed with pellets containing 45% protein; 3) unstocked and manured; and 4) control. From June to November the mean gross primary production, net primary production, chlorophyll a concentration, and phytoplankton density were 133-488 mg C m-3 day-1, 88-400 mg C m-3 day-1, 2-12.3 mg m-3, and 412-2547 ind. mL-1, respectively. Primary production, chlorophyll a, and phytoplankton numbers were found to be highest in ponds manured and fed with 27% protein pellets.
