Heme oxygenase is the rate-limiting enzyme in the catabolism of heme, followed by production of biliverdin, free iron and carbon monoxide. It was discovered at the beginning of the 60's decade, but didn't go until half-filled of eighties when an inducible form of heme oxygenase was discovered, named heme oxygenase-1.
