Background: Diabetes mellitus is not only an independent risk factor for the development of arteriosclerosis, but also a risk factor for the surgical and interventional treatment of coronary artery disease (CAD). Patients and Methods: In 2003, a consecutive series of 2,142 patients underwent isolated coronary bypass grafting at the authors' institution, 567 of these suffering from diabetes mellitus.
