This paper describes a non-destructive technique developed to measure kiln brown stain, which occurs approximately 1 mm below the surface of the timber, in wood drying. Experiments were carried out to measure the change in colour of Pinus radiata wood from green to equilibrium moisture content (EMC) corresponding to the drying schedule used. At the end of each schedule, the boards were held at EMC to determine how the colour changed below fibre saturation point.
