Disorders of the upper airway in young horses

, : Disorders of the upper airway in young horses. Zycie Weterynaryjne 81(12): 824-827

Upper airway disorders are a very common cause of poor performance and even rest dyspnoea in young horses. Epiglottic cysts, epiglottic entrapment and epiglottic hypoplasia which may cause obstruction of the pharynx can often be found. Affected horses show exercise intolerance, noisy breathing and coughing. These abnormalities may be primary to lower airway disorders such as aspiration pneumonia or exercise-induced pulmonary haemorrhage.
