Food allergies

, : Food allergies. Harvard Medical School health letter 9(2): 3-4

The existence and diagnosis of food allergies are discussed. "Food allergy" refers to the response of the body's immune system to a particular food or closely related group of foods. Reactions include: milk, eggs, nuts, and fish (especially shellfish). Responses can be immediate or delayed. Diagnosing the problem includes: careful evaluation of the diet and symptons, a physical examination to rule out non-food causes and a challenge test (double-blind testing is recommended). The only effective treatment is elimination of the offending substance(s). (kbc)
