Managing child and adolescent obesity: the SHAPEDOWN program

, : Managing child and adolescent obesity: the SHAPEDOWN program. Topics in clinical nutrition 6(4): 70-76

The author believes that a family-based approach to individual or group counseling is the treatment of choice for pediatric obesity. Although the effectiveness of such approaches is impressive, implementation requires clinicians who have completed specialized training in family-based pediatric obesity assessment and treatment and an obesity intervention that targets the weight, behavior, and interactions of the family. The experience of the SHAPEDOWN program will be used in this article to illustrate the process and content of pediatric obesity care that can successfully be provided by nutritionists in consultation with health professionals from other disciplines.
