Stable isotope methods for nutritional diagnosis and research

, : Stable isotope methods for nutritional diagnosis and research. Nutrition Reviews 40(5): 129-134

Within the last decade, interest in the use of stable isotopically labeled tracers and stable isotope techniques for human biochemical studies has increased. This methodology allows for a diverse array of analytical studies that can be used for a broad range of organic and inorganic nutrients. Examples include: optical emission spectroscopy for measuring nitrogen turnover; nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) in absorption spectroscopy; and gas chromatography, mass spectrometric analysis for mineral studies and total body nitrogen. It is expected that stable isotope methodology will be used in the next 10 years to answer important nutrition questions. (rkm)
