Bromegrass toxicity vs. nitrogen starvation

, : Bromegrass toxicity vs. nitrogen starvation. Jour Amer Soc Agron 34(8): 770-773

Greenhouse studies were made of the growth of bromegrass and 5 other grasses on soil taken from a "sod-bound" field of bromegrass as compared to the growth on soil from a cultivated field on which brome-grass had never been grown. An application of 200 lbs. of NH4SO4 more than overcame the detrimental effect of the previous growth of bromegrass, thus affording no positive evidence to indicate that a toxic constituent had been produced by the bromegrass. The so-called "sod-bound" condition in the field under question was attributed to an accumulation of excessive C in relation to N brought about by the continued growth of bromegrass.
