Disorders of the Digestive System Leading to Vitamin Deficiency States in Infants and Children

, : Disorders of the Digestive System Leading to Vitamin Deficiency States in Infants and Children. Bulletin of the New York Academy of Medicine 20(1): 25-33

In patients who suffer from some serious disorder of digestive function, vit. deficiency may be encountered even though the intake of vits. conforms to avg. normal requirements. Since the mechanisms at fault are those of absorption and utilization, one finds deficiencies of the fat-soluble vits. A, D and K in diseases accompanied by faulty absorption of food fat, while deficiencies of the water-soluble vits. are more common under circumstances in which there is some error of utilization of the vit. after it has been absorbed. Disorders of the digestive system encountered in infancy and childhood were briefly reviewed from the standpoint of their effect on vit. absorption and utilization. It was pointed out that in many instances the prophylactic administration of large doses of vits. of the fat-soluble group or of the water-soluble group, as indicated by the underlying digestive disorder, served effectively to suppress or entirely to abolish the signs of specific vit. deficiency. Under these circumstances doses of vits. of a magnitude not otherwise justifiable become mandatory.
