The optimum temperature for lycopene formation in the tomato Bonny Best and Marglobe was found to be 24 degrees C. Ripened at 32 degrees -38 degrees C. yellow fruits were produced which became normal colour when returned to 20 degrees -24 degrees C. Fruit ripened at 40 degrees C. remained green when submitted to 24 degrees and 32 degrees C. Given a suitable temperature ethylene hastens lycopene formation and chlorophyll decomposition.
