Trials with Vicia spp. showed that hairy vetch gave the highest yield on the sandy soils, while on the loam and heavy soils purple vetch proved superior in most cases. Excellent results were obtained with the Austrian winter peas. Some progress has been made in selection work with varieties of cowpea ), with a view to securing a desirable strain for forage and green manure purposes, which under Californian conditions will set a satisfactory crop of seed.
