In order to determine the effect of the constituents of alkaline soils on the rate of decay of Douglas fir (Pseudotsuga taxifolia), 5 gm. of fine, air-dried sawdust were placed in 125 c.c. Pyrex extraction flasks, to which 25 c.c. of solutions of sodium carbonate, sodium bicarbonate, sodium chloride, or sodium sulfate. were added in duplicate, several different strengths of solution being used. The culture flasks were then plugged with cotton and sterilized for 20 minutes at 10 lb. pressure.
