The chemical eradication of lawn weeds

, : The chemical eradication of lawn weeds. Proc Amer Soc Hort Sci 35: 845-849, 1937( )

A series of herbicides were tested on 52 sample plots. Ethyl 9-acetoxy mercuri 10-methoxy stearate (mercurated ethyl stearate) proved more effective than over iron sulphate, copper nitrate, or ammonium phosphate. The stearate was dissolved in kerosene at concs. ranging from 0.1% to 1%. One liter of this mixture gave opt. coverage on 50 sq. ft. of lawn area. The opt. conc. for average lawn conditions was 0.3%, though concs. as low as 0.1% were superior to a 17.5% soln. of iron sulphate, which was the most widely used weedkiller for lawns. When applied at the proper time of year and at the correct conc. the stearate killed dandelion, crab grass (Digitaria sanguinalis), Plantago major and P. lanceolata. It defoliated Kentucky blue grass (Poa pratensis), but the crowns remained uninjured, and regeneration occurred.
