The effect of nicotine-bentonite and of certain physical states upon the efficacy of phenothiazine against nematodes in fowls

, : The effect of nicotine-bentonite and of certain physical states upon the efficacy of phenothiazine against nematodes in fowls. Jour Parasitol 30(3): 143-152

A mixture of phenothiazine, 33%, nicotine-bentonite containing 5% of nicotine alkaloid, 66%, with a lubricant, 1%, was pressed into tablets, weighing 1.33 [plus or minus] 0.029 gm., which were very effective for the removal of both Ascaridia galli and Heterakis gallinae. Comparative tests of the tablet with each of the ingredients suggested that the materials exhibit an additive action against A. galli, but they exhibit very slight therapeutic interference against H. gallinae. A mixture of these materials is likewise effective when administered to birds in feed. However, the anthelmintic action appears more variable, presumedly because there is less control over the dosage. The particle size of the phenothiazine administered to chickens had no discernible effect on the anthelmintic effect of the drug. A "wettable" phenothiazine (containing 1.3% of gum karaya and algin) was at least as active an anthelmintic as the pure compound.
