Toxicity of fractions of hog liver fatty acids to chicks fed a vitamin E deficient diet

, : Toxicity of fractions of hog liver fatty acids to chicks fed a vitamin E deficient diet. Jour Nutrition 28(4): 297-302

The fatty acids from hog liver fat were divided into 3 fractions by freezing from an acetone soln. at different temps. and tested for their effectiveness in producing exudative diathesis and encephalomalacia in chicks reared on a vit. E deficient diet. Fraction 1 (separated above [long dash]20[degree]C; I No. 5) fed as a 4% supplement had little effect and gave only exudates. Fraction 2 (separated between [long dash]20[degree]C. and [long dash]72[degree]C; I No. 104) at the same level gave both exudates and encephalomalacia. Fraction 3 (remaining in soln. at [long dash]72[degree]C; I No. 241) caused a rapid onset of severe encephalomalacia and early death. The deleterious effect of this fraction could be prevented by d,l-a-tocopherol acetate. When fed in smaller amts., corresponding to 0.5-0.6% of the diet, this fraction gave both exudates and encephalomalacia. Some of the unsaturated fatty acids from the diet may be taken up by tissue lipids and thereby play a role in the development of the symptoms.
