A study of the effect of restricted lighting on January hatched pullets

, : A study of the effect of restricted lighting on January hatched pullets. Poultry Sci 34(5): 1045-1047

White Leghorn pullets hatched January 28 were reared when 13 weeks old under a restricted lighting schedule: 8 hours of artificial light and 16 hours of darkness daily. At 30 weeks old the light was advanced to 14 hours daily. A 2d group of birds was maintained under normal daylight with additional artificial light provided at the age of 35 weeks to give them 14 hours of light daily. During the period when light was restricted to 8 hours feed consumption and egg production were retarded, as compared with the control group. When exposed to 14 hours of light, egg production of the group previously restricted to 8 hours of light increased to a level in excess of the control group, even when the latter also received 14 hours of light[long dash]89.4 and 72.7% respectively. Egg weight and body weight were the same in both groups at the age of 40 weeks.
