Certain olefinic peroxides, formed when ozone reacts with the vapors of unsaturated hydrocarbons derived from gasoline and other petroleum products, caused silvering, bronzing and spotting of many agricultural crops. Furthermore, the growth of plants may be materially retarded without visible symptoms of injury. The failure of several crops to produce normal yields may be associated with growth retardation. Recent annual crop losses from smog damage have exceeded $500,000 in Los Angeles County. Injured crops have been observed also in neighboring districts and in the San Francisco Bay area. Warm temp. (75[degree]F), high N fertilization, and high soil moisture prodispose plants to smog damage. The older foliage is most susceptible. Extent of injury depends also on length of exposure and conc. of toxicant. Vars. of a given crop respond differently to air-borne peroxides. Known susceptible and resistant crops and vars. are listed in a table.
