Diagnosis of streptococcal mastitis and its forensic significance

, : Diagnosis of streptococcal mastitis and its forensic significance. Kieler Milchwirtschaft. Forsch-Berichte, 4: 5, 595-616

Experiments in testing for streptococcal mastitis, carried out in 16 herds over 4 years, showed that the following combination was simple, cheap and reliable: (i) catalase value of milk, (ii) direct microscopic examination of milk sediment stained with toluidine blue. (iii enrichment of the sediment in 0.1 per cent glucose broth, microscopical examination after 20 hr. at 37 degrees C., (iv) in doubtful cases, further cultural and serological tests on organisms isolated in (iii) Of the cases of strepto-coccal mastitis observed, 91.7 per cent were due to Streptococcus agalactiae, 5.8 per cent to Str. dysgalactiae and 2.5 per cent to Str. uberis. After the foot-and-mouth epidemic of 1951, a higher incidence of Str. dysgalactiae mastitis was observed. Subclinical infections, caused by an atypical form of Str. agalactiae, appeared in cows given repeated penicillin treatments.
