, : Dissemination of plant pathogens on nursery and ornamental plants. Plant Dis Reporter 38(6): 417-420

The following examples are cited to illustrate the ease with which agents of plant disease may be disseminated in association with nursery stock, and the serious consequences of such dissemination: camellia flower blight (Sclerotinia camelliae); cypress root rot (Phytophthora cinnamomi); gladiolus diseases due to viruses and the fungi Stromatinia gladioli and Curvularia lunata; crown gall (Agrobacterium tumefaciens); and root-lesion nema-todes (Pratylenchus spp.). Shipping point and terminal inspections alone will not suffice to prevent the spread of pathogens in association with nursery stock; it will probably be necessary to increase the attention given to field inspection of nursery crops and to develop methods of disease indexing so that disease-free propagating stock can be grown. This is particularly true of gladiolus where virus may be present without causing symptoms.
