Sampling in tree measurement sales on northern region national forests

Samples were taken from scale books of sales by tree (as opposed to log) measurement in Ponderosa Pine, Douglas Fir and Western Larch stands, and the total sale volume thus calculated was compared with the actual recorded volume. The study showed that sampling in tree-measurement sales gives reasonably accurate results. There is an estimated saving, over measuring all trees sold, of about 10 cents a tree.
