Sugar-beet, under normal conditions, is a biennial plant which forms rosette leaves and a thick root with high sugar content in the first year. In the second year, from buds formed on the root neck, flowering stems develop and ripe seeds are produced at the end of the vegetative period. Of these buds, not all develop in the second year. Some remain dormant until the third, or even the fourth years. By planting-out the roots in the 3rd year these buds produce new stems.
