Studies on the forest vegetation of Yanaze district, Shikoku, Japan.

, : Studies on the forest vegetation of Yanaze district, Shikoku, Japan.. Research Reports of the Kochi University, Kochi. 3: 10, 12

Extensive areas are covered by coniferous forests, chiefly composed of Cryptomeria japonica and Tsuga sieboldii. Deciduous forests, mainly Fagus crenata, occur above 1200 m. alt. Nine main communities were analysed. T. sieboldii/Chamaecyparis obtusa and T. sieboldii/Pseudotsuga japonica are topographical climaxes on shallow soils and rocky slopes; C. japonica is absent and Rhododendrons are dominant in the shrub layer. Pure C. japonica forests are found on deep fertile soils of flat ridges.
