Experiments in France started in 1942 were designed to evaluate the effect on yield of root-grafting apples. Winter Banana, Red Delicious, King David, Reinette du Mans and Cox's Orange Pippin were grafted onto the rootstock in 3 ways, namely onto root pieces, by whip grafting onto the root collar, and by budding above the collar.
