A graft-transmissible factor associated with pear decline

, : A graft-transmissible factor associated with pear decline. Phytopathology 53(3): 366-367

Apparently healthy pear trees on Pyrus ussuriensis and P. serotina were graft-inoculated with tissue from orchard trees affected by pear decline. Inoculated trees developed a significantly higher incidence of phloem abnormalities than did uninoculated controls in 2 separate experiments. The transmitted factor induced excessive formation, abnormal differentiation, and necrosis of sieve tubes immediately below the union of stock and scion. These symptoms were identical to those of the inoculum source trees and those consistently associated with pear decline.
