A review of the trypanosomiasis problem on the Shika Stock Farm, Northern Nigeria, from 1929 to the present day

, : A review of the trypanosomiasis problem on the Shika Stock Farm, Northern Nigeria, from 1929 to the present day. Bulletin of Epizootic Diseases of Africa. Bulletin des Epizooties en Afrique 11(4): 391-401

The history of tsetse and trypanosomiasis at the Shika Stock Farm is traced from early records to the present time. A combination of spraying the reserves and the first en masse treatment for several years virtually solved the disease problem at Shika, until a further increase in the incidence of Glossina morsitans necessitated further spraying. It is suggested that had there been complete veterinary control initially, the losses at Shika need not have occurred. A suggestion is made how to overcome any similar problem which may arise on other agricultural farms.
