Chemicals and their effects

, : Chemicals and their effects. Symposium on mutation and plant breeding, National Academy of Sciences, National Research Council, Washington, DC, 891, 120-44. Price: $4.50

In a survey of developments over the last 20 years the effects of various groups of chemical compounds are reviewed. It is pointed out that the work has not shed new light on the nature of the gene but has shown "the stability of the hereditary mechanism is under complex control." Though there seems to be a common mechanism for the production of gene mutations, chromosome breaks and minute rearrangements, crossing over seems to have a different mechanism.
