Data on the feeding habits of the sable in north-western Jakutia

The main study was on the stomach contents of 227 sable collected in the basin of the Oleneka River in winter 1950-51, when feeding conditions were bad. In fact 109 stomachs were empty. Of the others 110 contained animal remains and only 11 plant remains; 91 contained twigs, lichens and even earth or paper. The commonest food mammal was Clethrionomys rutilus, found in 41 stomachs, and the commonest bird grouse (Lagopus spp.), in 32. Fish had been eaten by 29.
