Effect of field and packinghouse handling on bruising of Florida tomatoes

, : Effect of field and packinghouse handling on bruising of Florida tomatoes. Proc. Fla St. hort. Soc. 76: 301-4. bibl. 2

Mature-green tomatoes of the Homestead variety were evaluated for external and internal bruising after each step from harvest to packed fruit. Most of the external bruising was incurred during harvesting, hauling and dumping onto the grader. However, most of the externally damaged tomatoes were removed during grading. Internal bruising tended to increase during the entire harvesting and packing process, although a slight drop occurred as a result of the removal of externally damaged tomatoes.
