End checking prevention methods. End sealers

, : End checking prevention methods. End sealers. Research Project, California Redwood Association, San Francisco. 3.22412 Interim Report C, 3

To evaluate the cost factors involved in the use of 6 commercial end-sealers, 22 test units of "heavy segregation" flat-grain Redwood with matching control units, were obtained by resawing 2-in. timber. These were then end-sealed, and air-dried to 40% m.c. before kiln drying. All boards were then examined for end checks and the end-sealers evaluated in terms of their % effectiveness in preventing loss through end checking.
