Evaluation of some soil moisture characteristics of Iowa soils

, : Evaluation of some soil moisture characteristics of Iowa soils. Iowa agric. Exp. Sta. Res. Bull, 465: 411-420

In a glacial-till, silty clay loam under fallow there was large variability in soil moisture even over a few feet; under maize considerable variability was found from hill to hill. Variations between hills increased with depth down to 5 ft. Variation between replications was greatest in the surface foot. The standard error of the mean of 6 samples (taken with a Veihmeyer tube) in a 40 X 40 ft area was 0.18, 0.22, 0.31, 0.47 and 0.48 inches for the 0-1, 1-2, 2-3, 3-4 and 4-5 ft depths.
