Influence of feeding various levels of velvet beans to chicks and laying hens

, : Influence of feeding various levels of velvet beans to chicks and laying hens. Journal of Nutrition 75: 127-131

Two chick experiments and one laying hen experiment were conducted to determine the effect of incorporating various levels of velvet beans into the diet. A significant depression of growth was obtained by feeding diets containing 12.5% velvet beans to chicks. Feeding of diets containing 50% velvet beans resulted in significantly increased mortality. Hemorrhage was the principal lesion found on autopsy. They were found in the thigh musculature, and on the mucosal surface of the duodenum and esophagus. A reduction in rate of egg production resulted from feeding diets containing 12.5% velvet beans. As the level of velvet beans in the diet was increased rate of egg production was decreased. It is concluded that velvet beans contain a factor (s) which interferes with the normal processes of growth and egg production in chickens.
