Influence of nitrogen on uptake of calcium

, : Influence of nitrogen on uptake of calcium. Soil Sci 91(1): 66-69

Plants were grown in greenhouse pots on Merrimac sandy loam pH 4.85 and low in Ca. Four levels of fertilizer N were used and 4000 lbs. of 30-50 mesh, low Mg limestone were placed in a 2-inch soil zone, at a depth of 1-3 inches. N increased per cent and total Ca in tomato and buckwheat plants, but not in oats. N increases root cation exchange capacity, which in theory increased uptake of the divalent cation Ca. N has an important effect of modifying the K/Ca ratio in the plant.
