On the permeability of Lactobacillus arabinosus to biotin

, : On the permeability of Lactobacillus arabinosus to biotin. Journal of Biological Chemistry 233(1): 243-244

A study was made of factors influencing the uptake of biotih by cells of L. arabinosus suspended in a buffered solution of this vitamin. It was found that the penetration of biotin was increased by the presence of glucose and that the effect of this carbohydrate was inhibited by the addition of iodoacetate. Homobiotin, an effective antibiotin for this organism, inhibited completely the entrance of biotin into the bacterial cells. The results are in keeping with the concepts of active transport and stereospecific permeation systems.
