Presented here is a study on the underground connections of some abaca varieties grown in the 3 abaca regional districts of the Philippines (Davao, Leyte and the Bicol region) at different ages or periods of growth. Results of studies and observations on representative hills of the different varieties used have so far shown that there are no disconnections of the rootstocks from the "mother" corms even among 18-month-old abaca hills. On 24-month-old hills, only 1 out of 10 representative hills of Tinauagan-Puti and Inosa varieties showed disconnections. On Lauan-Tangongon, 4 out of the 10 hills showed disconnections. However, it was noted that there seemed to be abnormalities at the points of the disconnections which had rough edges suggesting insect attack. Even in 33-month-old hills, there were but 2 hills in Tinauagan-Puti that showed disconnections as evidenced by 2 separated clumps, 3 in Inosa variety and 4 in Lauan-Tanunspecifiedonunspecifiedon. Disconnections of rootstocks appeared in the majority of the 48-month-old hills of all varieties studied, namely, Tinauagan-Puti, Tinauagan Pula, Sogmad, Samina, Itom, Casilibon, Abuab, Puti-Tomatagacan, Lausigon, Itolaus, Putimag, Laguis Maasin, Inosa, Linawaan, Lauan-Tanunspecifiedonunspecifiedon, Tarigongon Bayi-on, Bongolanon and Maguindanao. All 57-month-old hills of all varieties had underground disconnections: ranging from 2 to 4 in Tinauagan-Puti, averaging 3; 2-4 in Inosa, averaging 2.5; and 2-5 for all other varieties studied, with Lauan-Tanunspecifiedonunspecifiedon averaging 3.3 clumps. In the light of these results, complete eradication of infected hills even a little beyond 3 years old in plantations intended for seed or planting purposes seems possible. However, for commercial plantations (for fibers) partial eradication, provided the plantations are given the necessary care and culture, has been consistently recommended by the writer. Apparently the safe age to practice the so-called "partial complete" eradication of mosaicked hills for the abaca seedling bank is at least 4 years or over.
